Mogadishu Survey‏

The University of California, San Diego, partnered with Students of University and Higher Institutions Association (SUHA) to conduct a large-scale survey of house hold welfare in Mogadishu. The SUHA students successfully traveled to all 16 Districts of Mogadishu, surveying more than 1,000 house holds in 240 locations, to better understand the population’s access to food, services, and security. The survey sheds light on how the city has changed over the last twelve months, and will provide valuable information to NGOs and other organizations seeking to begin projects in the city.

This survey is the first-stage in what will be a long-term, joint endeavor between the University of California and SUHA. The project has also benefited from the participation and leadership of the Somali community in San Diego, especially Abdimalik Bu’ul, Chairman of the Somali Youth League of San Diego. Overseeing the project with Mr. Buul was Postdoctoral Researcher Dr. Nicholai Lidow from UCSD. Dr. Lidow spearheaded this survey which was the first to cover a representative sample of this magnitude since 1987 during the Barre regime.

Dr. Lidow was impressed by the work of the students who carried out the project and their smooth implementation. “I am impressed by the diligence of the SUHA staff and the progress the city of Mogadishu has undertaken in the past few months, I look forward to collaborating on more projects on Somalia in the future”.

This was Mr. Bu’ul’s second trip to Mogadishu in the past six months, and he hopes that the communities in the Diaspora-and especially the students-will continue to increase their engagement and participation in Somalia. “I hope this project will be a catalyst for young students in the Diaspora to bring their education and experience to their homeland, and partner with their local counterparts to work towards a more prosperous future,” Mr. Bu’ul said.
